Quiet Time

We often hear Christians use the term “Quiet Time.” Quiet Time is the time we spend communicating with God, both in prayer and in reading His Word

Prayer

In the Gospels we see many instances where Jesus took times of prayer to talk with His Heavenly Father. What can we learn about Jesus’ “Quiet Time”? He used this time to get away and re-charge. (Luke 5:15-16 ) He found a time and a place to be alone (Mark 1:35)

Scripture Reading

The Bible also tells us it’s important to spend time reading God’s word. Psalm 1:1-3 speaks of the man whose “delight is in the law of the Lord, and who meditates on his law day and night. That person is like a tree planted by streams of water, which yields its fruit in season and whose leaf does not wither— whatever they do prospers.” In Psalm 119:145 – 148 we read, “I call with all my heart; answer me, Lord, and I will obey your decrees. I call out to you; save me and I will keep your statutes. I rise before dawn and cry for help; I have put my hope in your word. My eyes stay open through the watches of the night that I may meditate on your promises.” We are encouraged to obey, hope in and meditate on His Word!

Why Does God Want Us to Spend Time Each Day With Him?

1. God uses His Word to reveal himself to us. This is one way he uses to talk to us! Through His Word, and through daily prayer, we can build a relationship with Him and grow close to Him! James 4:8 tells us, “Draw near to God and He will draw near to you.” In order for us to draw near to him, we must be communicating with Him each day! He speaks to us through His Word primarily, and while we are praying. He allows us to “talk” with him through prayer. Our “prayer talk” should include praise, thanksgiving, requests, confession – and sharing our thoughts, struggles, joys, questions and comments.

2. God uses his word to show us how to live, and to prepare us to do good works for him! 2 Timothy 3:16 “All Scripture is God-breathed and is useful for teaching, rebuking, correcting and training in righteousness, so that the servant of God may be thoroughly equipped for every good work”. Our Bible serves as an instruction manual, so that God can train us in the skills and attitudes we need to do His work!

3. God shares His wisdom with us so we can gain understanding and obtain direction in life! Proverb 3:1-6 My son, do not forget my teaching, but keep my commands in your heart,
for they will prolong your life many years and bring you peace and prosperity. Let love and faithfulness never leave you; bind them around your neck, write them on the tablet of your heart. Then you will win favor and a good name in the sight of God and man. Trust in the LORD with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding; in all your ways submit to him, and he will make your paths straight. What a blessing it is to have the world’s Creator share with us His wisdom. Why are we not eager to jump right in and capture this?

Think of it – the God who created this universe wants to have a personal one-on-one relationship with us! He wants to share His secrets with us and reveal to us all truth. Yet we take this privilege for granted or get too busy, or simply show no interest in spending time with our Maker and Sustainer. If Christ himself needed daily time with his Father – to recharge, to gain wisdom and direction - how much more do we need to spend time EVERY DAY with God! Our Quiet Time with our Heavenly Father should be more than just a need, or an obligation, is should be “our delight”!
